UFOs: What We Know (And Don’t Know)
The Michael Shermer Show # 440
Robert Powell is a founding Board member of the Scientific Coalition for UAP Studies (SCU). He is a member of the Society for Scientific Exploration, the UFODATA project, and the National Space Society. Powell worked in engineering management in the semiconductor industry for nearly 30 years, and helped Advanced Micro Devices develop its first flash memory technology that is used in today’s flash cards for cameras, PCs, video cameras, and other products. His new book is UFOs: A Scientist Explains What We Know (And Don’t Know).
Shermer and Powell discuss: • technosignatures and biosignatures • convergent vs. contingent evolution • SETI science vs. UFO/UAP science • Are they out there? Have they come here? • what alien intelligence might be like (biological, digital, or otherwise) • Bayesian reasoning about UFOs and UAPs • the U.S. military UAP videos and what they represent • The Disclosure Project from the U.S. government • Projects Sign, Blue Book, Cyclops, Grudge • AATIP (Advanced Aerospace Threat Identification Program) • directionality and teleology in evolution of life • interstellar travel • Dyson spheres, rings, and swarms.

    I was into "Ancient Aliens" (the gods) *L O N G* before they were fashionable. As a "cosmic" new ager I listened to a lotta mediums channeling spiritual E.T.s, and they spoke amazing, ear-tickling, EGO-STROKING things....... I was utterly entranced by the deep wisdom.... Now I'm in a different LIGHT (John 8:12) I see what a FOOL I was. For all the talk of a Great Awakening a *Greater Deception* is coming....... ..... A lotta UFO's are secret Gov. tech; but not all. Aliens/E.T.s are super-intelligent yet highly deceptive FALLEN ANGELS: the deviant *sons of God* of Biblical fame and their abominable *H Y B R I D* or synthetic A.I. creations (the Men in Black, the Greys, Reptilians, Mothman, Sasquatch etc). The Fallen are VIRTUAL REALITY MASTERS out to *mess with our minds* and make us believe in *stuff* that ain't based in truth (John 14:6) - It's all about *deceiving humanity* and it's REAL EASY.

    religion is all about our profound need to ground contact epistemology in 'ultimate concern', that life is relevant, and we and the ones we love are relevant.

    life world modelling is 'just making it up', conjoined with contact epistemology, a very special kind of imaginination called 'imaginality', where imagined models are pruned on the basis of the quality of their predictions. Religions don't need to eschew contact epistemology to maintain fidelity to ungrounded propositions in the form of revealed truths, but they most definitely need to ground them in contact epistemology. The ultimate leap of faith is that the world is actually intelligible, and that is the most wonderful thing of all, the greatest gift.

    Many thanks for this interview. Like Carl Sagan interviews, I found it so compelling that I just ordered her book. p.s. I still feel very fortunate to have attended a Carl Sagan lecture at the University of Toronto in 1988. During the Q&A, many adults wanted to speak with Carl but he pre-announced that he wanted to limit his time to students. Over the next 45 minutes the audience watched in amazement as he convinced almost everyone that being a scientist or engineer would be preferable to being an astronaut. An educator to the very end.

    I think that propelling craft to 20% or 99% the speed of light is impractical. Dust exists floating in the solar system and I assume with the amount of stars that have collided or gone supernova spewing out elements in all directions, everything from dust to micro meteorites to chunks the size of planets or moons are probably just floating through the void everywhere. The energy released if you collide with anything those speeds would be immense.

    The presumption that extraterrestrials need to travel at near light speed to visit us is unwarranted. What if they had detected life on our planet with James Webb type telescopy and sent robotic exploratory probes 20,000 years ago? What if they had had to abandon their stellar system (due to the dying of their star) and moved into nomadic spacecraft colonies eons ago? All the BS about the galactic distances being too great to make visitation by extraterrestrials plausible is based on a bunch of unwarranted presuppositions. Aliens could have been sending exploratory missions across the galaxy a billion years in the past. And- whoops!- now maybe there here. Cosmic physics tells us that, since the Big Bang, there has been several generations of stars completing their life cycles, going supernova, and creating all the heavier elements needed to form rocky planets, generate life, and evolve intelligent life forms for a couple of billion years in the past. It blows my mind that this aspect of reality doesn't enter the conversation more frequently. All the discussion about whether aliens could achieve near-light-speed travel, create a warp-drive, etc. is bootless. Not only are those speculations impossible to assess, but they are not needed to explain possible ways that aliens could have reached us by this point in time.

    I like the story Mike recounts from the blowhard claiming that on average one craft is recovered each year, some due to crashes. So, they figured out interstellar travel which is pretty tough but can’t avoid crashing into the earth? Imagine how full the ocean must be with alien craft since it covers so most of the planet.

    • @clivewells1736
      @clivewells1736 21 годину тому

      If you look at ALL the available evidence you can find many different types of alien reports stretching throughout history. Mostly humanoid, but all different shapes and sizes behaving like ordinary people flying over a mysterious island looking at people and houses but not landing. Most that do land either go straight to people and cows or fix their ship. The ones that go to people and cows seem mostly to be collecting biological material for genetic and reproductive purposes. This activity reminds me of a nature reserve where a whole lot of different agencies and individuals are going about their business with various levels of authority and openness. Some are sightseers and tourists some are park and gamekeepers and some are clandestine individuals and organized criminals with agendas related to survival. If we extrapolate our survey to include those witnesses who are, for various reasons, unable to report their experiences the number of witnesses is absolutely massive. Even if you rule out 50% as mistaken or falsified that still leaves thousands of witnesses, often with close, sometimes painful, prolonged and: more rarely - repetitive, physical contact. Anyone who doubts the possibility of other intelligent lifeforms is in good companythe life

    Religious discussions with highly intelligent people are strange because the words the dominant hemisphere uses to describe the non-dominant hemisphere processes do not mean the same thing as the dominant hemisphere uses to describe itself. The religious world-view is a valid way of dealing with dat to day reality. Science is a valid way to address the world of technology. Atheism rejects hope, because there is none beyond persinal effort and fate. Religion provides meaningful gatherings, corporate givings, comfort of ceremony and ritual, hope of an afterlife. Leave religion (except radical islam) alone!

    Michael, I really like your podcast. You have some great guests. This guy is a total moron. He comes at a question with an answer and then tries to find evidence to support it. "It seems to me" is not the way to investigate something. I'm shocked you did not push back harder on some of the BS. The guy has an unacceptable understanding of the scientific method. His understanding of biology is painful (paraphrasing) "I don't know much about biology but I have a gut feeling that DNA cannot evolve by simple mechanisms, that there has to be a code." He doesn't understand evolution with his complete misunderstanding of high altitude adapted humans. He doesn't understand how military intelligence works. As to the topic at hand. UFO debunkers call themselves skeptics, but they are less skeptical when it comes to explaining some UFO cases by obvious BS explanations like swamp gas, Venus, etc. How likely is it that a pilot with thousands of flight hours is chasing Venus? He must have seen Venus countless times, and this one time he came to the conclusion that it was a UFO. Or, for example, the case of a Japanese civilian pilot seeing a metallic object the size of a large ship. One explanation offered in a documentary is that he saw some glittering pieces of ice in the atmosphere and this "solves it all". However, no effort has been made to show the public a video or anything similar to demonstrate what these ice particles really look like. And why? Because then it would be obvious that any person of average intelligence would not mistake it for a metallic flying craft.

The bit where she talks about people pressuring Congress and White House to do something reminded me of it. The question is, "Do what?" If she, after taking all this time to study the matter and write the book, cannot propose anything specific, what can one expect from the general public? BTW, I think we are now way closer to nuclear war than we were in the 1980s.
